I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Graphic design with a minor in Graphic Arts Imaging Technology from Appalachian State University. Even though having a degree sounds good, I feel the 11 years of running a freelance business is far more useful.
1998-1999 I worked at Clark Printing as a designer in Asheville NC while finishing college. This gave me first hand knowledge of every aspect of the printing industry.
In 2000 I moved with my wife to the Nashville area, where I took the job as graphic designer for a record label. During this time I was continuing Right Hand Design which was my freelance business I had started in college. After less than a year the record company decided to close and I went freelance full-time.
In 2003 Integrity Media started a film & video division in Brentwood TN. I was hired as the senior designer but as an independent contractor. This allowed me to continue my freelance business as I had my office with Integrity Film & Video. A little over two years later they decided to close so I was back on my own again.
During the summer of 2007 I was approached by Zungz to design a logo for their new invention. During the next few months I designed their marketing materials and helped them give their brand a look. We became good friends and I was given a % of the company and asked to come on board fulltime. I worked with them for the next year and a half launching their new product.
From 2009 till now I have been back to full-time freelance work and I am actively looking for my next challenge.
Marketing and Advertising: I have always loved the concept of getting the consumers attention. How do I make this product stand out from the rest? How do I make the consumer stop and read this ad? I find great joy in these challenges and you will be hard pressed to find someone who does more research than I do on the given subject matter.
PRINT: There is nothing better than seeing the design that was in your head being put to paper. I have a passion for print work with an extensive knowledge of the printing industry. I have been using Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign for over 14 years now and consider myself somewhat of a pro (even though I still learn new techniques daily). Photo retouching is another of my passions and I am hired to retouch many of the musicians here in Nashville.
WEB: Web design is an ever changing industry. In the last recent years I have thrown myself into this world and was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoy it. I love to stay on top of the new trends and technology but also stick with good design principles. I prefer to hand code websites using an HTML text editor instead of using a program like Dreamweaver. WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver are great and I am very comfortable working in many of them, but there is no better control than doing it by hand. I am very well versed in HTML and CSS, and I have a working knowledge of PHP and Javascript.
I have never been fired from any job.
I have never advertised my freelance business in 11 years and relied solely on my name and word of mouth.
I find more fulfillment in solving problems than anything, be it design problems, or rewiring my house.
I want to finish an Ironman one day. I have always been intrigued with pushing your body to the limits.
I love to trout fish in the mountains and wish I had more time to do it.
